It is quite fascinating with the science of metrology! We had a lab on it the other day, since as an engineer you need to be able to make detailed drawings of the components you want to build. To be able to get enough detail on them, you need to be able to understand how me measure things, and how accurate it is possible to be.
These days all standard units has a basis on the molecular level, or a metre being
"the length of the path travelled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1/299,792,458 of a second."
We had to measure quite a lot of different dimensions, some down to the accuracy of a thousand of a milimetre!
